CORDIS is one of the cornerstones of the European Commission’s strategy to disseminate and exploit research results and it is governed and funded as part of the Horizon 2020 framework programme.

On the 17th of February Current Direct was presented at the webinar “Advancing the European transition to hybrid and electric vessels” by our Technical Project Manager Shaun White, who did a brilliant presentation about the latest news on our most recent assessment of the applicability and suitability of swappable battery container solution to the Inland Navigation Fleet.

This webinar is part of the Maritime Hybrid Electric Hydrogen Fuel Cells Webinar Week and aimed the debate of the European market’s view on the ability of hybrid and all-electric systems’ to significantly reduce fuel consumption and emissions alongside vessel operating and maintenance costs.

The second edition of Current Direct newsletter has just been released!

This second issue focuses on the main achievements accomplished during the last six months of the project and on the main events where Current Direct was and will be presented.

The newsletter is available, check it out here, subscribe it and get to know this project that will revolutionize the way we move goods and people by water with the use of swappable containerized batteries connected to an Energy as a Service Platform.

The Energy Planner provides vessel Owners, Operators and Charterers with a Zero Emission Battery Swapping Energy plan for Inland Waterway vessels based on a few key vessels and journey parameters. Using these parameters the Planner quickly estimates the number of Current Direct swappable battery containers and swapping operations required to achieve an absolute zero-emission voyage.

The Planner provides a selection from several ‘generic’ power profiles that provide simplified % power vs % time journeys along the Rhine Corridor. The resulting Energy Plan provides the indicative energy needs of inland waterway vessels and fleets and can assist owners to commence planning for the transition to a zero-emission solution based on swappable battery container technology.

The Planner is built upon extensive data harvested from the existing IWT Fleet and inland waterway network.

The oral presentation is to take place at the conference on day 4 (26^th of October) between 13:00-14:45 (UTC +2). Carsten Jandura (Blackstone Technology GmbH) will be speaking about their thick-layer technology, which is a greener approach to manufacturing of lithium-Ion electrodes.

The event took place on the 14^th of September. It was an excellent presentation by Shaun White (Spear Power Systems) and Jan-Erik Räsänen (Foreship) on Current Direct. This was a great opportunity to promote the Current Direct project to the Electric & Hybrid Marine Industry.

We are pleased to announce that Current Direct technical project coordinator Shaun White, will have the opportunity to share how Current Direct project will electrify the inland waterway fleet at the IVR annual congress in Ghent, Belgium (7 & 8 October)

The presentation will take place on the 7^th of October as part of the IVR workshop ‘New Professional Qualifications’. Shaun will share Current Direct view on specific training, education and qualifications requirements for operating hybrid vessels through an innovative swappable energy container and Energy-as-a-Service Platform.

Fantastic to see the Current Direct project partner Rhoé Urban Technologies participating live in the 8th International Conference on Environmental Management, Engineering, Planning and Economics (CEMEPE 2021) and SECOTOX Conference.

Rhoé presented their literature research on the transferability of shore-side Battery Swapping Service systems to waterborne transportation, which is the result of comprehensive research conducted under the Current Direct project.
